Australia's double world champion Tyler Wright has been ruled out of the latest World Surf League event in Saquarema in Brazil due to a visa problem.

Wright is currently sixth in the overall women's standings - with the top five qualifying for the season-ending finals at the end of the campaign.

She will be unable to make up ground in Brazil, however, where the eighth out of 10 legs of the season before the Finals in California will begin tomorrow.

"Devastated to let everyone know that due to a transit visa not coming through in the specified time I am unable to make it to Brazil," Wright said.

"All other alternative options were extensively looked into, however the current travel climate meant it was impossible for me to arrive in time for the contest.

"Absolutely gutted, so much work went into getting me ready for Brazil with my team.

"Absorbing this and we keep moving forward."

Wright had already been forced to miss the sixth leg of the season in Indonesia due to COVID-19.

The women's standings are currently being led by Hawaii's Carissa Moore, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medallist, who has not won an event this season but has finished second twice.

Brazil's Filipe Toledo leads the way in the men's rankings after winning one competition so far.

At the last leg in El Salvador, American Griffin Colapinto and Australia's Stephanie Gilmore won the men's and women's events respectively.

Both moved up to third overall as a result.

Competition in Saquarema, also known as the Oi Rio Pro, is due to continue until June 30.
