Bosses at the Stade de France in Paris have insisted that work to modernise the stadium before the Paris 2024 Olympics open in two years time is all but complete.

"Everything is finished, there is only one electrical connection left which will be made in June 2023," Consortium Stade de France spokesman Loïc Duroselle told the French sports newspaper L’Equipe.

The stadium is set to be the centrepiece for the 2023 Rugby Unions World Cup which is scheduled to open on September 8, but the authorities came in for criticism after incidents before the UEFA Champions League football final in May when ticketing issues and clashes between police and spectators marred the build-up to the match.

The facelift is thought to have cost around €40 million (£34 million/$40.75 million) and is set to include a new athletics track for the Olympics and Paralympics which is expected to be installed between March and June 2024.

"We are still in discussions with Paris 2024 but there should be a slightly different configuration," Duroselle added.

Work on the stadium has included the installation of special lighting.

This new technology has already been used during matches in the Six Nations Rugby Championship.

"As for the matches of the Six Nations tournament, with the French Rugby Federation, we can transform the stadium into a nightclub," Duroselle said.

Such lighting shows were not possible with previous arrangements.

The work has included adjustments to the media conference auditorium which has been increased in capacity from 250 seats to 320, and now includes a ramp for wheelchairs and two enlarged jumbo screens in the stadium.

Upgrades have also been made to refreshment facilities with six additional bars on the ground floor.
