Two-time Tour de France winner Tadej Pogačar of UAE Team Emirates kept hopes of a third consecutive title alive by pipping yellow jersey rival Denmark's Jonas Vingegaard of Team Jumbo-Visma to the line on stage 17 today in Peyragudes, as many general classification contenders faltered.

The two were part of a breakaway that moved with 25 kilometres up Col de Val Louron-Azet, catching a group of 15 riders who had made an attack earlier.

Today's route covered 130km from Saint-Gaudens.

Also in the pack were Vingegaard's team-mate Sepp Kuss from the United States, Pogačar's team-mate Brandon McNulty from the US and Britain's Geraint Thomas of Ineos Grenadiers, who was third in the general classification.

Kuss and Thomas fell away, leaving McNulty with the two top two in the general classification.

After an initial attack from the Slovenian, the trio were reunited on a descent, meaning all three climbed to the finish together.

Vingegaard managed to sandwich himself in front of Pogačar and behind McNulty, indicating that he was ready to attack and eventually it was the two yellow jersey contenders who made a slow sprint up the final climb.

Both put in bursts, but it was Pogačar who crossed the line first in 3 hours 25min 51sec, with Vingegaard on his wheel.

McNulty was third, 32 seconds down on the front two.

Thomas was fourth, 2min 07sec down from the pair he hoped to challenge for the general classification, while Kazakhstan's Alexey Lutsenko of Astana was fifth.

Most of the rest of the top 10 in the general classification - including Colombian Nairo Quintana of Arkea-Samsic, Frenchmen Romain Bardet of Team DSM and David Gaudu of Groupama-FDJ - were more than three minutes down, while British rider Adam Yates of Ineos Grenadiers was several minutes off the lead.

Due to crossing the line first, Pogačar took four seconds out of Vingegaard in the general classification, bringing the lead down to 2:18, while Thomas is third overall, just inside five minutes.
