The US won the last edition of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) AmeriCup in 2017, beating Argentina in the final to win gold for the seventh time and the first since 2007.

FIBA has since made its Continental Cup competitions quadrennial rather than biennial tournaments, and the latest edition was postponed last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The US are the world number one ranked side, and are due to open their campaign in Group C against 2013 winners Mexico, who were bronze medallists five years ago.

They are then set to face a Venezuela side who were champions in 2015 in before facing Panama in what looks a highly competitive group.

Venezuela and Panama are due to play the opening match of the tournament tomorrow.

Group A begins tomorrow with matches between Uruguay and Colombia, and hosts Brazil against Canada.

Backed by a home crowd at the Ginásio de Esportes Geraldo Magalhães, Brazil are seeking to lift the trophy for the first time since 2009 and are the third highest ranked side from the Americas in the FIBA rankings.

Group B is set to start on Saturday (September 3), with Puerto Rico playing Dominican Republic and Argentina facing the Virgin Islands.

Argentina have finished as runners-up at the last two editions of the FIBA AmeriCup, and medalled at every edition since 1999, while the Virgin Islands achieved their best ever finish of fourth in 2017.

The top two from each group advance to the quarter-finals, along with the two best third-placed teams.

Group matches are set to conclude on Monday (September 5), followed by the quarter-finals on September 8, semi-finals on September 10 and medal matches on September 11.
