The International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) has published a provisional sports programme for the IWAS World Games in Vila Real de Santo Antonio, with wheelchair slalom added as a demonstration event.

Wheelchair slalom, which sees athletes navigate through obstacles, was once a Paralympic discipline, but not since Seoul 1988.

Para athletics - including frame running - is one of three sports on the agenda for this year's IWAS World Games.

Para swimming and Para powerlifting are also due to be contested.

"The 2022 edition of the IWAS World Games will be truly special - we are firmly back after nearly four years away," IWAS President Rudi Van Den Abbeele said.

"The numbers of athletes coming from all four corners of the globe reflects the value our members place in the Games and shows that it remains an important highlight in their calendar.

"It is also a milestone in the history of IWAS, as it will be the last Games held before we merge with the Cerebral Palsy International Sports and Recreation Association in 2023."

The IWAS World Games had to be moved from Sochi in Russia to the new Portuguese location because of the war in Ukraine.

Vila Real de Santo Antonio previously staged the event 2017, while Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates hosted the most recent edition in 2019.
