The event saw the three age group united for the first time, with combat and sport sambo contested.

Sport sambo was held across board, whereas combat sambo was only staged for junior men.

Kazakhstan dominated combat sambo events, with Israel also enjoying some success, while Armenia impressed across the disciplines.

"I want to single out the Kazakhstan national team, which won three gold medals out of seven possible at once in combat sambo competitions," Shestakov said.

"Israeli sportsman David Allahverdiev also made pleasant surprise: he became the first in the weight category up to 88 kilograms in combat sambo.

"I hope this medal will become a new impetus for the development of sambo in Israel.

"Uzbek and Mongolian sportsmen performed well and will take home several awards of the highest standard at once.

"And of course, I congratulate the host team of the championship - the Armenian national team, which demonstrated character and won 20 medals of various denominations."

Shestakov also thanked "the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Armenia, the National Olympic Committee of Armenia and the Sambo Federation of Armenia for the brilliant organisation of such a major tournament".

Shestakov, who is Russian, noticeably heralded athletes from Armenia and other countries rather than Russian competitors, who were allow to take part under the FIAS flag.

Under the FIAS flag they won 35 gold medals across the three age groups.

The FIAS has banned Russia and Belarus' flags because of the war in Ukraine, but not athletes from the pair outright, stopping short of the International Olympic Committee's recommendation. 

An estimated 500 athletes from 23 countries took part in the World Youth, Junior and Cadets Sambo Championships.
