The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has relocated this year's World Tour Finals from Guangzhou in China to Bangkok in Thailand due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Competition is now set to be held in the Nimibutr Arena with matches now being staged between December 7 and 11.

The World Tour Finals were initially scheduled for between December 14 and 18.

The International Federation has cited "stadium availability and a consequence of the change in location" for the alteration in dates.

Qualified athletes are due to be announced on November 22 once the Australian Open has concluded.

"BWF in consultation with the Chinese Badminton Association (CBA) agreed to relocate the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals 2022 due to the various challenges brought about by the current pandemic situation," a statement from the governing body read.

"BWF would like to thank CBA, Guangzhou City Government, and Guangzhou Sports Bureau for their extraordinary work.

"BWF would also like to thank the Badminton Association of Thailand for providing a replacement location for the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals 2022 at such late notice."

China's strict COVID-19 policy has caused a significant ripple effect on sport with several events either being postponed or relocated entirely.

Only table tennis has held a major event in China since Beijing 2022, with strict lockdowns still in place in many parts.

The Chengdu 2022 World Team Table Tennis Championships followed a closed-loop management system similar to the one from the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Alternatively, several sports events in China have been postponed or cancelled due to the pandemic.

This includes a Super 500 event in Hong Kong and a Super 300 tournament in Macau, which have not been held by the BWF for three consecutive years.

Last month, the 2023 World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou was delayed to 2025.

The Nanjing 2023 World Athletics Indoor Championships was postponed to 2025 while the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games and Asian Para Games were also postponed by a year.
