Late goals from Cody Gakpo and Davy Klaassen gave The Netherlands a key victory against African champions Senegal at the FIFA World Cup.

After a stagnant opening 80 minutes, Gakpo made a perfectly-timed run to get on the end of Frenkie de Jong's cross and nod the Dutch in front after 83 minutes at the Al Thumama Stadium in Doha.

In the ninth minute of added time, Klaasen then reacted quickest to tap home a rebound from Memphis Depay's shot to seal the win.

Gakpo's opener came from The Netherlands' first shot on target while Klaasen's strike was the nation's latest-ever goal scored at the World Cup.

The two sides are tipped to progress from Group A, which also includes Qatar and Ecuador, so it is a vital three points for the Oranje as they seek top spot.

The Netherlands are now undefeated in 16 matches under coach Louis van Gaal while the triumph also extends an unbeaten record in their opening World Cup games that dates back to 1938.

Aliou Cissé's side were badly missing talisman Sadio Mané, who was ruled out for the entirety of the tournament with a leg injury sustained in Bayern Munich's 6-1 win over Werder Bremen.

The Senegalese did not manage a shot on target until the 65th minute when Boulaye Dia almost snuck an effort past debutant goalkeeper Andries Noppert from a tight angle.

To make matters worse for Senegal, Nottingham Forest midfielder Cheikhou Kouyaté had to be stretchered off after being hit in the testicles by de Jong.

The Dutch are now joint leaders in Group A with Ecuador following the latter's 2-0 win against Qatar on the opening day.

The two sides are set to Meet on Friday (November 25) at the Khalifa International Stadium in Al Rayyan.
