Odermatt and Kilde had won each of this season's six races before today, but neither made the podium in Val d'Isère.

Braathen was second at the halfway stage, 0.07sec behind compatriot Henrik Kristoffersen, and began his final run with a 0.49 advantage over clubhouse leader Manuel Feller.

Braathen grew that lead with another brilliant and rhythmic ski, finishing 0.84 in front of the Austrian.

That was more than enough for victory as Kristoffersen could not hit the heights of run one and fell to sixth place.

Feller was therefore second for the second day in a row and Switzerland's Loïc Meillard third.

Sweden's Kristoffer Jakobsen and then Alexis Pinturault - the top skier for host nation France - completed the top five.

This is Braathen's third career World Cup victory and second in slalom.

It lifts him to third in the in the overall World Cup standings, but he is still some way off Odermatt and Kilde.

Baraathen has 215 points, Kilde 380 and Odermatt 520.

Switzerland's Odermatt, who won the giant slalom race in Val d'Isère yesterday, did not take part today and has criticised the International Ski and Snowboard Federation over the congested calendar.

Norway's Kilde skipped both Val d'Isère races.

The men's Alpine Ski World Cup circuit next visits Val Gardena in Italy for three speed races, beginning on Thursday (December 15).
