A total of six athletes from Britain have been shortlisted for the Deaf Sports Personality of the Year award for 2022, varying from hammer throwers and cricketers, to mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters and futsal players.

Charlotte Payne has been recognised for her achievements in hammer throwing, becoming the champion at the British Athletics Championships this year - making her the youngest gold medallist and third-best British women's thrower ever behind Sophie Hitchon and Anna Purchase.

Her throw of 70.59 metres broke the world deaf record in the process, beating the previous best by nearly five metres.

At the European Throwing Cup, she was second in the under-23 category behind Polish rising star Ewa Różańska too.

George Greenway and Josh Price from the England deaf cricket team have also been shortlisted, with Greenway being the captain of the national side since 2019.

He led his country to victory in the first Deaf Ashes and hit 52 runs not out in the first one-day international (ODI) with Australia in Brisbane.

Greenway was also the number-one draft pick, being picked to compete in the inaugural Disability Premier League for Black Cats.

His team-mate Price was named the Player of the Series at the Deaf Ashes in his debut season with the national team.

Price won the Ashes for England with 11 wickets in the series and scored 83 in his opening ODI match.

Golfer Matthew Bradshaw made the list after winning the England Deaf Golf Spring Event in 2021 and attaining scratch status in golf.

This year he was third at the Spring Event, second in the England Deaf Golf Open Event and first at the England Deaf Golf Autumn Event.

He was also 12th at the World Deaf Golf Championships in Hawaii from a field of 41.

MMA's Thomas Paul is recognised for becoming champion at the Retribution Fighting Championships and nearly earning an Ultimate Fighting Championship contract after competing at Dana White's Contender Series in Las Vegas.

He is also ranked seventh in Britain in his weight category.

Women's futsal player Zara Musker is the final nominee, having been part of the England team to win their first-ever title at the European Deaf Futsal Championships, becoming the top scorer at the tournament with 10 goals.

Marios Costi, Musker's national futsal manager, is one of three candidates for Coach of the Year too.

He is joined by the coaches at Farsley Celtic Deaf Football Club and England's cricket coach Mark Nash.

Fittingly, both the England men's cricket and women's futsal sides are in the running for Team of the Year along with Northern Ireland Deaf Ladies bowls team after winning the Home Nations for a second year in a row.

Online voting is now open up to until December 31.
