He said 2022 would be remembered for members "boldly" backing to get rid of the body that acts as a gatekeeper to sports being recognised, towards potential Olympic recognition in future.

Ferriani, who is also President of SportAccord that is to receive the assets of GAISF, said it was the right decision, adding that the process was being overseen by liquidators Ernst & Young to ensure it was a smooth transition.

"We now have the opportunity to build on the great work done by GAISF in decades past and forge an exciting new future, together, through a restructured SportAccord," said Ferriani.

"Continuity is, of course, vital. 

"So we are driving forward with key structural changes to SportAccord and the integration of activities, responsibilities and staff members into SportAccord are very much on track."

The Association of IOC Recognised International Sports Federations (ARISF) and Alliance of Independent Recognised Members of Sport (AIMS) are to become members of SportAccord, along with the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) and the Association of International Olympic Winter Sports Federations (AIOWF) as part of the restructure.

"The global sports community will remain united within a strengthened SportAccord through the representation of the umbrella organisations," said Ferriani.

"The International Federations will continue to be the gateway for new sports through a new Membership Commission overseeing the application process for entry into AIMS."

He also took the opportunity to promote the World Combat Games in Riyadh next year, which is organised by GAISF, SportAccord, the Saudi Arabian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and the Organising Committee for the Games.

Members voted 70 votes to 22 in favour of dissolving GAISF at its Extraordinary General Assembly last month in Lausanne.

There was opposition from the likes of the International Orienteering Federation, who unsuccessfully attempted to delay the vote, claiming there were "a number of unanswered and unclarified questions".

International Teqball Federation chairman Viktor Huszár said it was "poor governance", going as far as to criticise the transparency of the process.
