Serbia’s Novak Djokovic says he wants to "move on" as he returned to Australia a year on from his infamous deportation from the country on the eve of the Australian Open in Melbourne.

Djokovic, the winner of 21 Grand Slam singles titles, has been granted a visa by the Australian Government, and is due to play at the Association of Tennis Professionals Adelaide International 1, set to begin on Sunday (January 1).

He was unable to compete at last year's Australian Open due to his unvaccinated status.

Speaking to the media following a training session Djokovic said of his deportation last year: "I had never experienced such a thing, and I hope never to be confronted with it again.

"It's one of the things that sticks with you, that stays with you for, I guess, the rest of your life".

Speaking about his return to Australia, Djokovic added: "I've only been here two days but everyone has been very pleasant, extremely nice to me.

"I have always felt very good in Australia, I have always played my best tennis and I have had a lot of support there, so I hope to live another great Australian summer".

Djokovic is then set to take part in the 2023 Australian Open, after missing last year’s edition following his deportation.

Tournament director Craig Tiley said: "Novak is welcome in Australia.

"He’s going to be the player to beat at the Australian Open again".

Tiley added he was confident that Djokovic would get a good reception when he takes to the court in Australia, saying: "I have a great deal of confidence in the Australian public".

The year’s first Grand Slam is scheduled to be held at Melbourne Park from January 16 to 29.

Djokovic has won the Australian Open men’s singles title a record nine times, including the last three occasions on which he has contested the tournament.

In his absence last year, Spain’s Rafael Nadal claimed the crown.

Nadal currently has 22 Grand Slam titles in total, with Djokovic one behind on 21, putting them in the top two positions on the overall list.
