The Opening Ceremony of the International University Sports Federations (FISU) Winter World University here tomorrow is set to honour the region's Native Americans by starting with an ancestral welcome and land acknowledgement.

A performance of Ohenton Karihwatehken, known in English as Greetings to the Natural World, is then set to follow by Akwesasne singer-songwriter Theresa Bear Fox at the Olympic Center in the New York village.

The tradition is commonly referred to as the "opening address" and aims to recognise the importance and relationship of life forces in creation as well as to unite people.

Lake Placid lies in the Adirondack Mountains which has served as hunting grounds for several nearby groups in the past, most notably the Mahicans and the Mohawks of the Iroquois Confederacy.

Following the Parade of Nations, which will see many of the 1,443 athletes competing at the Games walk the arena in their country's colours, the United States national anthem is set to be performed by Christopher Kinney.

Kinney is a former bobsledder who competed in the four-man event at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang before coming out as bisexual.

A series of welcome speeches are then scheduled during the 90 minute Opening Ceremony from Lake Placid 2023 President James McKenna, FISU Acting President Leonz Eder, and New York State Governor Kathy Hochul.

A ceremonial trio of  the raising of the FISU flag, playing of the body's anthem, and a athlete oath precedes a 14-minute "creative suite".

The performance is split into three segments: "gathering in the light", "sharing in the light", and "celebrating winter".

Sustainability is a main theme of the Games so an environmental tribute is anticipated to take place, most likely in the creative suite.

The Lake Placid 2023 Torch Relay is set to reach the end of its 16-stop tour and light the Games' cauldron to officially mark the beginning of the event.

In addition to the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, the Olympic Center is due to host ice hockey semi-finals and finals in the men's and women's competitions in the Herb Brooks Arena.

The venue famously hosted the "Miracle on Ice" game that saw the US' 4-3 victory over the four time defending Olympic ice hockey champions Soviet Union at Lake Placid 1980.

The ice hockey tournaments have already begun at the Games with Slovakia taking a convince opening victory 4-0 against Hungary at Cheel Arena in Potsdam in the men's event.

That was followed by Japan's 8-3 domination of Latvia in Roos House in Canton.

Action then returned to Potsdam, this time at Maxcy Hall, for the women's curtain-raiser where Czech Republic trounced Britain 13-0.

Britain's men fared no better as they fell to a heavy 18-0 defeat at the Cheel Arena while Canada's women beat Slovakia 4-0 at Maxcy Hall to finish the day's action.
