Lap counter chaos gave France short track victory today at Lake Placid 2023 ©FISU

France were awarded short track speed skating gold after the lap counter was found to be faulty here at the Lake Placid 2023 International University Sports Federation (FISU) Winter World University Games.

South Korea, the United States and China were all penalised in the mixed team relay as they failed to complete their laps whereas the French did finish them at the Olympic Center.

They were found to be the only the team to make the correct transitions in the right place.

Kazakhstan and Japan, who finished as the top two in the B final, were promoted to silver and bronze, respectively.

Also in the short track, triple Olympic champion Choi Min-jeong won her second gold of the Games as she was victorious in the women's 500m in 44.050.

China's Wang Yichao prevented South Korea from picking up a one-two finish by crossing the line in 44.568, beating Park Ji-yun by 0.155.

Shoga Miyata put on a superb display to prevent Kim Tae-sung adding to South Korea's remarkable medal tally in the sport.

China's Li Kongchao fended off the US' Brandon Kim to bag bronze.

This pushed his country down to fourth overall while Tom Mancini, Gianni Giachino, Matteo Correia, and Simon Chappaz won with a time of 1:17:01.5.

It was enough to beat Norway's 1:17:29.8 while Japan snuck into the bronze medal position 26.9 later.

Poland won women's team ski jumping gold at a canter, with Nicola Konderla's 98.2-point final attempt providing the killer blow.

Together they amassed a score of 397.9 to beat compatriots Paulina Cieslar and Anna Twardosz on 357.0 and the 327.4 points of Japan's Miki Ikeda and Machiko Kubota.

Austria's Maximilian Lienher and Timon Pascal Kahofer took the men's team crown by a minute 0.2 margin, with 470.5 points, over Kazakhstan's Danil Vassilyev and Sergey Tkachenko.

He finished with 172.00 to take the title after notching 85.00 and 87.00 in his first two runs.

Moritz Breu of Germany bounced back from crashing in the second run to notch 82.25 in the third to seal silver with 170.25.

Despite poor visibility. the Italian clocked a combined time of 1:54.25 to take the title at Whiteface Mountain.

Her final run saw her replace Switzerland's Valentina Macheret who finished with 1:55.39.

Sweden's Sara Rask took bronze in 1:55.51.

Over at the Olympic Speed Skating Oval, David La Rue put in a sensational final two laps to move from 10th to first in the men's mass start.

The Canadian picked the perfect moment to unleash his attack and claim gold in 8:34.59.

It is his first victory of the Games after winning bronze in the men's team pursuit and 1000m.

5000m silver medallist Daniele Di Stefano did enough for silver with 8:35.29 before La Rue's compatriot Hubert Marcotte also made the podium 0.10 off the Italian.

Misaki Shinno led a Japanese one-two to take women's mass start speed skating gold as she finished in 9:56.42 and was followed by compatriot Yuka Takahashu 0.17 later.

Germany's Josephine Beate Heimerl made up the top three with a time of 9:56.81.

Jakob Geßner of Germany beat Thailand's Paul Vieuxtemps and Vojtech Bresky of the Czech Republic in the men's freeski big air.

Japan's Yuna Koga was triumphant in the women's big air ahead of Michell Rageth of Switzerland and Viivi Paljärvi of Finland.
