Hughes and Cheng defeated reigning world champions and the top-ranked team Eduarda Santos Lisboa, known as Duda, and Ana Patricia Ramos of Brazil 21-18, 21-16 in the Qatari capital.

The Americans quickly got onto the front foot as they built up a four-point lead, however it was quickly wiped out.

Duda and Ramos then took control for a moment but Cheng's dominance from the net saw the pair surge towards victory.

She shared the top scorer tag with Duda in the final with 20 points apiece.

"Kelly and I are so happy!" said Hughes.

"That was just such an amazing finish.

"I am so proud of her! She was absolutely perfect and I think we are very steady as a team.

"We are so excited to come out with a win, and we are also looking forward to next week."

Hughes and Cheng won gold in the Challenge and Elite16 events earlier in the season in Torquay in Britain.

"I am speechless right now.

"I'm really proud of our team.

"We have another tournament next week, so we are probably going to get some ice cream from the mall and then sleep for like 12 hours tonight.

"We'll sleep and recover as best as we can and then get out and fight next week."

In the men's tournament, Mol and Sørum ensured they lived up to their number one status with a 21-18, 21-18 triumph over Poland's Michał Bryl and Bartosz Łosiak.

"It's been just tough matches at this tournament," said Sorum.

"What's made the difference is that I have Anders Mol by my side.

"He was really carrying the team in this final.

"He played amazing, had some amazing blocks and just kept pushing.

"I was tired, but he just kept giving me good feedback on my reception, and it was enough to win the game.

"I'm super happy and proud of the team.

"It's been a long week."
