The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has said that "several" countries have expressed an interest in staging the 2028 Winter Youth Olympic Games.

Gangwon in South Korea is set to hold next year’s Games, but no host has yet been found for the 2028 edition.

The South Korean province was awarded the Games in January 2020 after the IOC Future Winter Host Commission identified it as its preferred candidate.

The selection of the 2028 Games host is set to go through the same process with the IOC insisting that there is "no longer a fixed election cycle" for the event.

The United States is the latest country to hint at a possible bid for the multi-sport event with Lake Placid - which staged the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics - considering putting its hat into the ring.

Lake Placid Mayor Art Devlin told insidethegames last month that discussions were underway over a potential bid after the village’s venues were revamped in time for staging this year’s International University Sports Federation Winter World University Games.

Italy has also proposed a Lombardy bid for the 2028 Winter Youth Olympics, while Ukraine had announced its intention to bid but that was made before the country was invaded by Russia.

The IOC said it was "permanently open to informal and non-committal discussions with any cities, regions or countries and their National Olympic Committees (NOC)".

"Several NOCs have expressed interest in hosting future Winter Youth Olympic Games, with the next opportunity in 2028," the IOC told insidethegames.

"One of the benefits of the collaborative and flexible new approach to elections is that it enables Interested parties and potential hosts to develop their projects according to their own context and strategic timeframe.

"This enables the IOC to bring the right project and partner for the Olympic Games at the right time, and to ensure strategic benefit for the Olympic Movement.

"The IOC respects the confidentiality of potential hosts as they work toward the development of the public and private dimensions of their project.

"Potential hosts and interested parties may promote their vision/project at national level at any time."

There have been three previous editions of the Winter Youth Olympics with Innsbruck in Austria staging the inaugural event in 2012.

Lillehammer in Norway played host in 2016, while Lausanne in Switzerland held the last edition in 2020 where almost 2,000 athletes competed across eight sports.
