The Oceania Badminton Championships got underway with the opening men’s singles matches taking centre stage in Auckland.

There was plenty of success for the hosts on the first day of action with 10 New Zealanders making it through to the next round.

Jack Jiang has sealed a clash with top seed Nathan Tang of Australia after beating Tahiti’s Heiva Yvonet 21-13, 21-13.

The other New Zealand winners were Andrew Rouse, Avinash Shastri, Niccolo Tagle, Tony Fang, Tony Chen, Ephraim van der Ley and Oscar Guo.

Australia also enjoyed success with Keith Mark Edison seeing off New Zealand’s Yifan Zhang 21-7, 21-9 to seal his place in the next round.

Kai Chen Teod, Julian Mao Lun Lee, Gavin Kyjac Ong and Ricky Tang also beat New Zealand opposition.

There was a walkover for Leonard Manuel of the Northern Mariana Islands, while Tahiti’s Remi Rossi defeated Australia’s Hongyuan Wong 21-19, 21-16.

"It was a hard match because first it was the first round, second my opponent was a good player, and third the shuttle was fast," said Rossi.

"With the stress of the first round, it was hard to control the pace and the shuttle, so I am really happy to get the win."
