Philippines are set to be represented at the 2024 Youth Olympic Games (YOG), with ice skater Peter Groseclose qualifying to compete in the short track speed skating.

Groseclose, 15, is set to become the third Filipino ice skater to compete in the YOG, after figure skater Michael Martinez participated in 2012, and short track speed skater Julian Macaraeg featured in 2020.

Groseclose qualified after his performances at the International Skating Union World Junior Short Track Speed Skating Championships in Dresden, Germany, earning spots in the 500 metres 1,000 metres and 1,500 metres disciplines.

Philippine Skating Union President Nikki Cheng said she was delighted Groseclose would have the opportunity to represent the country against more experienced competitors.

"While Peter is only 15 and it’s his first international season, he showed that he can deliver good standing amongst the best junior skaters in the world," said Cheng.

The event is set to take place from January 19 to February 1 2024 in Gangwon, South Korea, and is due to be the first time the Winter Youth Olympic Games will have been held outside of Europe.

Venues built for the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics are set to be used for competitions in Gangwon.
