Thai International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Patama Leeswadtrakul has expressed her grief at the death of 17-year-old footballer Duangphet "Dom" Phromthep, who survived the Tham Luang cave rescue in 2018.

Phromthep died in England where he had moved to undertake a scholarship at Brooke House College Football Academy in Leicestershire.

He was discovered unconscious in his room at the academy and later died in hospital, although the cause of his death has yet to be revealed.

"My tears fell when I first heard the news," Leeswadtrakul said, as reported by Bangkok Post.

"The IOC once took the 13 members of the Wild Boars academy to the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires.

"We had the opportunity to connect with them and introduced them to many Youth Olympic athletes.

"I would like to offer my condolences to Dom's parents and family."

Phromthep was captain of the Wild Boars team that joined the Buenos Aires 2018 Opening Ceremony and were honoured by IOC President Thomas Bach.

Thai Ambassador to the United Kingdom Thani Thongphakdi has said that his body has been sent to the HM Coroner's Office for Leicester City and South Leicestershire for post-mortem.

The Embassy made funeral arrangements at Wat Mahathat in Kings Bromley at the family's request.

"We unite in grief with all of Dom's family, friends, former teammates and those involved in all parts of his life, as well as everyone affected in any way by this loss in Thailand and throughout the college's global family," Thongphakdi said.
