The ceremony celebrated businesses, communities and individuals that make an extra effort in ensuring the environment is sustainable.

The club, who are currently fourth in the Scottish Premiership, introduced solar panels at their training complex and their stadium at Easter Road, which is in Edinburgh.

They have also used recycled material for matchday clothing and have meat-free catering options, along with a movement to use electric vehicles only.

All these efforts have been made to reduce carbon footprint and utilise renewable energy, as they strive to be the "Greenest Club in Scotland" while working with Environmental Waste Controls (EWC).

"I’m proud to be the MP for Hibs and it’s great to see the club getting the recognition it deserves for its leading role in reducing carbon emissions and tackling climate change," said Shepperd.

"Hibs has from its founding been a club with a strong social conscience and this tradition continues to flourish. 

"The first to wear the green and now the 'Sports Green Hero' award-winners."

Murray Milligen, the head of commercial for the club, expressed his appreciation for Hibernian being recognised for their work on sustainability.

"We are honoured to receive the 'Sports Green Hero Award,'" said Milligen.

"It’s great to see some recognition for the club’s continued efforts to reduce our carbon footprint. 

"I’d like to thank MP Tommy Sheppard for putting Hibs forward for the award and recognising the good work that has been done to date. 

"The club has a responsibility to champion sustainability and I’m sure we can continue to lead the way in Scotland and educate our community and wider audience on the importance of these environmental issues.

"I would particularly like to thank our friends at Environmental Waste Controls (EWC) who have played a big part in helping us manage our waste and recycling efforts much more effectively, as well as identifying other areas where the club can become more sustainable."
