Slovenia and Romania will be seeking to secure a place in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals for the first time when they do battle in the qualifiers.

The tie is due to be held tomorrow and Saturday (April 15) in Slovenian city Koper.

Romania reached the semi-finals in 2019 and regularly competed at World Group-level in the previous format of the competition but have lost four of their past five ties in a difficult four-year period.

Slovenia have spent the much of the past two decades competing at Europe/Africa regional group level since making the quarter-finals in 2003.

"Regardless of the result, I think we’ve come a long way," said Slovenian number one Tamara Zidanšek.

"It means a lot for the sport in our country and I hope that the young players can see that."

Another intriguing tie sees Ukraine and the Czech Republic go head-to-head in Turkey.

The clash is set to be staged on neutral soil at the Megasaray Club Belek in Antalya due to the war in Ukraine.

Marta Kostyuk, who rose to a career-high world number 38 after winning her first Women’s Tennis Association title in Austin last month, is set to begin Ukraine’s campaign against former French Open finalist Markéta Vondroušová.

"It’s going to be an interesting tie," said Kostyuk.

"Most of the ties I’ve played we were favourites and you know it’s a bit different this time.

"Marketa is a great player.

"She’s had a lot of injuries.

"She can be one of the best in the sport if she’s not injured.

"She has a very interesting game style, especially on a clay court.

"It’s very fun to test myself and represent my country."

The Czech team will hoping to improve on last year’s campaign where they reached the semi-finals before losing to eventual winners Switzerland.

Fellow semi-finalists Great Britain will play host to France in Coventry but will be without 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu.

Spain are due to meet Mexico in Marbella, Germany are scheduled to tackle Brazil in Stuttgart and Canada are set to host Belgium in Vancouver.

Other qualifiers are due to see the United States go up against Austria in Delray Beach, Kazakhstan scheduled to take on Poland in Astana and Slovakia due to face Italy in Bratislava.

The winning nations will advance to the finals where they will join Switzerland and Australia who have qualified automatically after finishing first and second respectively last year.
