Turin 2025 President Alessandro Ciro Sciretti has claimed the skating open week at the Palavela will be "a great taste" of what is to come at the next winter edition of the Winter World University Games.

The Palavela hosted figure skating and short track speed skating at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, as well as events in both disciplines at the 2007 Winter Universiade.

It is set to do so again at the Winter World University Games in the Italian city.

The iconic venue, which features in the iconic 1969 film The Italian Job, is due to host an open skating week from Monday (June 12) through to Friday (June 16).

People can register for free online, and the Turin 2025 hopes it can bring residents of the city, Piedmont region and visitors from elsewhere in Italy and abroad closer to the ice.

"The World University Winter Games are only a year and a half away, the ones that the whole world knows as Universiade because they were born in our city," Sciretti said.

"In our Road To 2025 programme, i.e. the path leading to the competitions that will be scheduled in January 2025 in Torino, Pinerolo, Bardonecchia, Pragelato and Torre Pellice, we are trying to involve the territory of Piemonte as much as possible.

"The Palavela is a jewel of our city and our region, and the joint idea with CUS [University Sports Centre] Torino of opening its doors free of charge for those who want to get close to the ice for the first time or to get back on it during the hot season, I think it is a great taste of what the Torino 2025 Games will be like."

CUS Torino President and Turin 2025 vice-president Riccardo D’Elicio said the open week is "an event for everyone" and would promote the FISU World University Games "in the best possible way throughout the entire city".

The next winter edition of the FISU Games is scheduled for January 13 to 23 in 2025.
