The Pan Arab Games are set to return for the first time in 12 years as Algeria prepares to welcome 22 nations and territories.

The event officially begins tomorrow with the Opening Ceremony at Algiers' Stade du 5 Juillet, and is being labelled as the Arab Sports Games.

In addition to the capital, events are also scheduled to take place in Oran, Constantine, Annaba, and Tipaza in what is the first time that five cities are hosting the Games.

Approximately 3,800 athletes are set to compete with the host nation due to take 454 as part of a 643-strong delegation.

Chef de Mission Hamza Deghdagh saying the team's goal is to finish top of the medals table.

It has achieved the feat once before back in 2004 when it also staged the Games in Algiers.

Algeria is fourth in the all-time standings behind Egypt, Tunisia, and Morocco.


Competition has already begun at the Games with football and athletics events taking place before the full schedule starts tomorrow, where medals in athletics, judo, and swimming are set to be awarded.

Sudan produced the most assertive display so far in the football tournament as they beat Lebanon 3-0 while the other Group A fixture saw Algeria and Oman play out a 0-0 draw.

In Group B, Syria drew 1-1 with Saudi Arabia Under-19 and Palestine and Mauritania also finished level on the same scoreline.

The Opening Ceremony of the Games coincides with Independence Day in Algeria after the nation was liberated from French rule on the date in 1962.

The Games will then conclude on July 15, with the only medals to be won on the final day in the basketball tournaments, prior to the Closing Ceremony.

The last edition of the Games was in Doha in 2011.

Lebanon was due to host in 2015 but "withdrew because of the crisis in the Middle East".

It is the 13th edition following the inaugural event in Alexandria in 1953.
