With the first edition of the European Para Championships in Rotterdam just over a month away, it is time to start thinking about the future.

To be completely honest, the future of our event has been on my mind quite a lot in the past months.

Do you know what? I would not declare our event successful until we find a host city to organise the next edition in 2027.

With the bidding procedure for the 2027 edition closing in December 2023, now is the time to start thinking about the possibilities and advantages of hosting the event in the (near) future.

And we are more than happy to share our knowledge about it all.

We are lucky enough that a few countries have already showed their interest in hosting the 2027 European Para Championships.

Those parties will join us during the observer programme in Rotterdam on August 12.

The observer programme will provide officials with a deeper understanding of the event as they are set to be given the chance to speak to the Local Organising Committee (LOC), international federations (IF’s), rightsholders and go on a guided tour.

Some interested parties have already signed a non-disclosure agreement and already received information about the event.

Others will join the programme (or do both).

During the observer programme we will talk about what it takes to host the event, but also about sustainability, financing, and broadcasting.

The importance of the event for the athletes as well as the importance for the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sports, the European Paralympic Committee and the host city will also be an important subject.

After the Observer Programme on August 12, interested parties are invited to one-on-one conversations the following day.

Of course, we are happy with the countries that have already signed up, but we are still looking for more.

Parties interested in staging a future edition of the event are still able to attend the programme and can sign up until July 17. Parties interested in attending the observer rrogramme are invited to contact Imke de Groot, the host liaison manager, at [email protected].

Even though the inaugural edition of the event still has to take place, we can already feel the enthusiasm from the Paralympic Movement about the European Para Championships.

We are happy to see that all the efforts and energy we have put into it the past four years are being recognised.

We have started a new movement in the world of para sports with the European Para Championships, even though we sometimes still feel like we are a start-up.
