Colombia missed the chance to clinch a golden double on the final day of tennis at the San Salvador 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games but still managed to top the sport's standings.

The country suffered a poor start as they fell 2-0 to the Dominican Republic at the Complejo Deportivo de Ciudad Merliot in the men's nations cup.

Roberto Cid battled to put the Dominicans ahead with a 2-1 triumph over Johan Rodriguez.

The pair went back and forth in the opening two sets, winning one each 6-4, but Cid eventually claimed victory with a 10-6 third-set tiebreak.

Cid managed to neutralise his opponent's serve in the decider as he took 50 per cent of receiving points.

Dominican Republic's number one Nick Hardt then put the game to bed as he cruised past Alejandro Hoyos in straight sets.

Hardt, winner of the men's singles tournament earlier, broke Hoyos five times on his way to the 6-3, 6-3 result.

Yuliana Lizarazo, Maria Herazo, and Maria Perez then combined to seal gold in the women's nations cup over Mexico.

South American Games bronze medallist Lizarazo took a straightforward win over Jessica Hinojosa, prevailing 6-4, 6-4.

Hinojosa's team-mate Maria Navarro then levelled up the tie by downing Maria Herazo.

She won the first set 6-2 before falling to a 7-5 loss in a gruelling second set lasting one hour and 13 minutes.

A 15-minute tiebreaker then followed which went to Navarro as Herazo struggled to capitalise on her first serve as she registered a 50 per cent success rate.

Navarro's win sent the fixture into a third match that saw her partner with Hinojosa in a doubles clash with Lizarazo and Perez.

The matches took place in quick succession and Navarro's fatigue was clear to see as her side lost 6-2, 7-6.

Lizarazo and Perez's success put Colombia on top of the tennis medals table with three golds and three silvers, while the Dominican Republic were runners-up with a hat-trick of titles, one silver, and one bronze.

The Games overall standings has Colombia on second with 86 golds behind Mexico's 142.

Competition is set to conclude tomorrow with medals due to be won in canoe sprint, mountain biking, karate, and volleyball.
