Japan wrapped up a medal-laden performance at the Asian Athletics Championships with a superb final day in Bangkok.

The Japanese team finished the tournament with 16 golds, 11 silvers and 10 bronzes to top the medals table in the Thai capital.

Five of those golds came on the last day as Towa Uzawa clinched the men’s 200 metres title in a time of 20.23sec.

Chinese Taipei’s Yang Chun Han clocked 20.48 for silver as Koki Ueyama joined compatriot Uzawa on the podium after finishing in 20.53 for bronze.

Japan’s first gold of the day came courtesy of Yutaro Murayama who won the men’s race walk crown in 1:24:40.

Murayama did enough to beat China’s Wang Kaihua who posted 1:25:29 for silver, while Vikash Singh of India registered 1:29:32 for bronze.

Japanese duo Hyuga Endo and Yuma Yamamoto secured the respective men’s and women’s 5,000m titles, while compatriot Roderik Genki Dean hit 83.15m for men’s javelin throw gold.


China placed second in the overall standings with 22 medals including eight golds, eight silvers and six bronzes.

The last two of those gold medals were won by Yang Liujing and Li Ling who were crowned the respective women’s 20km race walk and women’s shot put champions.

There was double delight for Sri Lanka as Tharushi Dissanayaka won the women’s 800m title in a Championship record time of 2:00.66 before the country earned men’s 4x400m relay gold.

Vietnam won their first gold medal with victory in the women’s 4x400m relay.

The men’s pole vault title was captured by Ernest John Obiena of the Philippines in a Championship record of 5.91m.

Qatar’s Abubakar Haydar Abdalla powered to the men’s 800m title in 1:45.33.

Shanti Pereira of Singapore completed a sprint double after backing up her women’s 100m success with victory in the women’s 200m.

She posted a national record time of 11.20, beating Iran’s Farzaneh Fasihi and China’s Ge Manqi who finished in 11.39 and 11.40 respectively for the other two podium spots.
