A record crowd of 7,033 packed into the Palacio de Deportes de la Comunidad de Madrid for the final only for the US to dash Spain’s hopes of a first title.

It was the third time Spain had lost to the US in the final after defeats in 2009 and 2011 but this was as close as they had come to getting their hands on the trophy.

The scores were level at 66-66 with 30 seconds remaining after Iyana Martin Carrion made a driving lay-up to the basket.

Martin Carrion and Elena Buenavida led the scoring for Spain, with 19 and 16 points, respectively to the delight of the home crowd but their efforts came to no avail.

With the match in the balance, Cotie McMahon gave the US the lead before Kira Rice landed a free throw to seal victory.

There was little between the two teams throughout but the US held the edge over the four periods thanks to heavy scoring from McMahon and Chloe Kitts.

McMahon made eight of 10 shots from the floor as she racked up 16 points, while Kitts notched 15 points and nine rebounds in an impressive showing.

The most valuable player awarded went to Martin Carrion who top scored for Spain, with 16.1 points per game, while also averaging 3.3 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 2.6 rebounds across the tournament.

Canada sealed the bronze medal after coming from behind to claim a 80-73 overtime victory over France.

The Canadian team, who last struck bronze in 2017, faced an 11-point deficit at one stage in the final quarter before pulling off a stunning fight back.

Syla Swords was the star performer for Canada as she amassed 26 points, six rebounds, and six assists in the bronze-medal clash.
