The Octagon Diamond Game sees competition take place in an octagonal structure, allowing a different use of space, while gamification effects are used to add a different experience for viewers.

South Korea took gold in both categories decided on the opening day, with Young Hwan-Kim winning the men’s under-63kg, after beating Afghanistan’s Bizhan Sadr Zada.

The bronze medals went to Kazakhstan duo Samirkhon Ababakirov and Yeldos Yskak.

In the men’s under-80kg South Korea claimed gold after Jin soo Choi overcame Eldar Birimbay of Kazakhstan.

Bronzes went to Afghanistan duo Omid Sahak and Ramesh Hussaini.

On day one of the World Taekwondo Beach Games, being held in Asia for the first time, the finals of the freestyle poomsae pairs over-17 event took centre stage.

Gold went to Colombian duo Maria Kamila Nino Hernandez and Jehison Camilo Mateus Barreto with a score of 7.099.

They edged out Puerto Rico’s Arelis Medina and Gaby Colon Maldonado, who took silver with a score of 7.066, while bronze went to Francisco Jose Tellez Munoz and Laura Iglesias Marquez of Spain with 6.766.

Elsewhere in the freestyle poomsae mixed team event, gold went to Ecuador’s Team ECU Poomsae.

In the freestyle poomsae individual disciplines, finals took place in the under-17 age group, with the men’s gold going to Sung hyun Eric Gun of the United States and the women’s to Sofya Tishkova, competing as an individual neutral athlete.

The first ever World Taekwondo Demonstration Team Championships has also got underway, with South Korea taking the top two spots on day one.

Performances last around five minutes and showcase self-defence and breaking techniques, with teams judged on synchronisation, team composition, presentation, staging and difficulty.

Competition is due to continue in Gangwon and Chuncheon tomorrow across all three events, while the Opening Ceremony is also scheduled to take place.
