Unseeded Wang Tzu-wei of Chinese Taipei claimed a surprise victory over China's Li Shifeng to make it through to the men’s singles quarter-finals at the Badminton World Federation World Championships here.

Li has been in fine form this year, winning his first Super 1000 title at the All England Open Badminton Championships in March before warming up to the BWF’s flagship event by capturing the U.S Open crown last month.

But the world number six’s hopes of going far in this competition are over following a 21-15, 21-14 loss against an inspired Wang.

The Chinese Taipei player, who reached a career-high ranking of nine in February 2021, produced a brilliant performance to knock out Li.

The world number 28 is the only unseeded player left in the men’s singles draw as he sealed a last-eight meeting with Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn.

The Thai, who finished runner-up last year and is seeded second here, had to work hard to see off India’s Lakshiya Sen 21-14, 16-21, 21-13.

There was double delight for Denmark with reigning Olympic and world champion Viktor Axelsen making it through before Anders Antonsen followed.

Axelsen withstood a fightback from Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien Chen to win 21-13, 21-19 before Antonsen overcame Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia 21-18, 21-17 at the end of a busy day of third-round action.

Ninth seed HS Prannoy of India will be Axelsen’s quarter-final opponent following his 21-18, 15-21, 21-19 victory over Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew.

Kenta Nishimoto won the all-Japanese battle against Kanta Tsuneyama, triumphing 21-19, 21-17 and will now face Antonsen in the last eight.

Kodai Naraoka of Japan produced one of the performances of the day to thrash Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu 21-11, 21-4.

China’s Shi Yuqi had to dig extremely deep to defeat Hong Kong’s Ng Ka Long Angus 21-7, 14-21, 22-20.

Wang Zhiyi pulled off a superb fightback to beat fifth seed He Bingjiao 13-21, 21-7, 21-14 in the battle of the Chinese players.

Her reward is a quarter-final against another Chinese player in third seed Chen Yufei who swept aside Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt 21-12, 21-13.

Former world number one Nozomi Okuhara, who is unseeded here, has set up a mouth-watering clash with top seed An Se-young.

The Japanese ace overcame Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon 21-19, 21-16, while South Korean An impressed in her 21-19, 21-13 success against American Beiwen Zhang.

Three-time world champion Carolina Marín of Spain ended Myanmar’s Thuzar Thet Htar’s run in the tournament with a 21-10, 21-18 victory.

The Spaniard will next face Chinese Taipei’s fourth seed Tai Tzu-ying who defeated Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong 21-18, 21-17.

China’s Han Yue was just two points away from advancing to the quarter-finals only for Indonesia’s Gregoria Mariska Tunjung to complete a 13-21, 21-19, 21-11 comeback victory.

Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi, who was due to face Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan, was handed a walkover, meaning the second seed will face Tunjung in the last eight.

Competition is due to continue tomorrow.
