The Team SD Worx rider moved into top spot after winning the second of the three stages of the International Cycling Union Women's World Tour event in Switzerland.

She came under pressure in the final stage over 131.9 kilometres to Nyon but managed to seal victory by finishing in sixth position.

A total time of 10 hours 12min 50sec for the 386.8km race saw Vollering secure top spot as Poland’s Katarzyna Niewiadoma of Canyon–SRAM Racing finished six seconds short in second.

Vollering’s team-mate Marlen Reusser of Switzerland was 12 seconds further back in third.

"It’s really nice," said Vollering in a report by Cycling News.

"I feel a bit tired because today was a really hard day, it was still a big, big battle for general classification and for the stage win.

"We needed to be very alert and also ride smart with what we closed or not, it was a really difficult day today."

When the race had made its debut on the calendar last year, it had also been won by a Team SD Worx rider when South Africa's Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio crossed the line first. 

It was a memorable final day for Germany’s Liane Lippert of Movistar who saw off The Netherlands’ Fem van Empel of Team Jumbo-Visma and Italy’s Silvia Persico of UAE Team ADQ to win the last stage in 3:18:31.

"My team did a fantastic job so could focus only on the sprinters, especially Paula [Patiño of Colombia] in the final kept all the attacks under control and led out my sprint," said Lippert.

"I had confidence in myself, and the team had confidence in me.

"It’s a victory for us all.

"Switzerland is my second home, I am German and Swiss, so it’s very special for me to win here."

The reminder of the UCI Women's World Tour is due to take place in China, starting with the Tour of Chongming Island from October 12 to 14.

That is then scheduled to be followed by the last race of the season, the Tour of Guangxi on October 17.
