Owners of the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles have reportedly threatened to pull out of hosting 2026 FIFA World Cup matches as part of a dispute over revenue distribution.

The 70,240-capacity venue, due to host the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, is the world's most expensive stadium at an estimated $5.5 billion (£4.5 billion/€5.2 billion), and opened in September 2020.

It was among the 11 venues in the United States selected last year to host matches at the expanded World Cup, along with three in Mexico and two in Canada.

However, The Athletic reports owner Kroenke Sports and Entertainment (KSE) is unhappy with how revenue is set to be shared between FIFA, host cities and the stadiums and seeking to renegotiate the agreement.

It is claimed KSE, founded by Stan Kroenke in 1999, has warned it could withdraw from hosting World Cup matches, although how serious it is about this threat is unclear.

The Athletic also reported FIFA has found American cities and stadium owners tough negotiators for the 2026 World Cup.

However, the governing body insisted it enjoyed a strong relationship with organisers in all 16 host cities.

"We have a strong working relationship with LA and all our 16 host committees, and have been working hand-in-hand on the details of delivering an unforgettable and unprecedented FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the US in 2026," FIFA told The Athletic.

"If you think about the size and scale of the largest single-sporting event in the world, the work involved in successfully delivering such an event for all fans and stakeholders is a massive undertaking.

"We continue to enjoy an open and productive dialogue on all elements of our collaboration."

The Los Angeles FIFA World Cup Host Committee claimed to The Athletic "the information you have shared does not accurately reflect the content of those ongoing, collaborative conversations" and described KSE as an "invaluable partner", but declined to expand on the inaccuracies.

A start date for the 2026 World Cup is yet to be announced, nor the allocation of matches to cities.

The final is due to be held on July 19 2026, but the venue is expected to be decided later this year.

The SoFi Stadium had been viewed as a contender to stage the final, but issues with its pitch size may mean it cannot be expanded to the required 80,000 capacity.

The MetLife Stadium near New York City and AT&T Stadium in Dallas are instead considered the most likely candidates to stage the final.

Los Angeles held the 1994 World Cup final at the Rose Bowl, but it was not chosen for matches in 2026.

FIFA President and International Olympic Committee member Gianni Infantino has been in the US this week with FIFA's chief operating officer for the World Cup Heimo Schirgi.

The 2026 World Cup is set to be the first to feature 48 teams, up from the 32 that have competed since the 1998 edition in France.
