The first quota places for next year’s Olympics in Paris are set to be allocated when the Asian Games officially gets underway with the opening day of competition.

Modern pentathletes will compete for Paris 2024 slots with five available in both the men’s individual and women’s individual events at the Fuyang Yinhu Sports Centre.

All four modern pentathlon competitions are due to be completed tomorrow, with athletes seeking medals in the men’s team and women’s events as well as the individual contests.

South Korea is expected to shine having been a dominant force in the sport at the Asian Games, securing 23 medals including eight golds since Hiroshima 1994.

Jun Woong-tae, the Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist, is among South Korea’s stars as he bids to defend the men’s individual titles in Hangzhou.

Japan’s Taisu Sato and China’s Chen Yan both impressed in qualifying and will be determined to deny Jun back-to-back titles.

The women’s qualification competition was called off due to bad weather earlier this week, meaning all athletes received direct access to the final.

Among the contenders include South Korea’s Kim Se-hee and Kim Sun-woo who both sealed a place on the podium at Jakarta Palembang, while China’s Zhang Mingyu is the defending champion.

A total of 31 sets of medals are set to be handed out on the first day of competition, with seven of those coming in both swimming and rowing.

Fencing, artistic gymnastics, judo, shooting, taekwondo and wushu are the other sports that will offer opportunities to win medals tomorrow.

Modern pentathlon is one of nine sports that will be providing quota spots for Paris 2024.

Among those is boxing with an International Olympic Committee Taskforce running the competition following the expulsion of the International Boxing Association from the Olympic Movement.

There will be 20 Olympic places available in the women’s competition, with four up for grabs in each weight category except for the 66 kilogram and 75kg division which only have two.

The men’s event will also serve as a qualifier for Paris 2024, with two athletes per category gaining a place at the Games.

Boxing competition is due to run from tomorrow until October 5, with bouts held at the Hangzhou Gymnasium.

Intensity is set to be high in the women’s and men’s hockey tournaments as the gold medallists will gain qualification for the Olympics.

Japan are the reigning champions in both events after getting the better of India and Malaysia in the respective women’s and men’s finals at Jakarta Palembang 2018.

Pakistan have won the men’s title on most occasions with their eighth and final crown coming at Guangzhou 2010.

South Korea have been the most successful in the women’s tournament, winning it five times with the last of those coming at Incheon 2014, while China will have high hopes having won it three times at Busan 2002, Doha 2006 and Guangzhou 2010.

Other sports where Paris 2024 places will be on offer include archery, artistic swimming, breaking, sailing, tennis, and water polo.

More than 12,500 athletes from 45 countries are due to compete over the next 15 days of competition, with the Games set to close on October 8.
