A poll has shown division among residents about San Fernando Valley hosting events at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics and Paralympics.

The poll conducted by the office of Democratic Congressman Brad Sherman for California's 32nd district received 410 responses, of whom 47 per cent supported staging the Games in the area while 14 per cent were opposed, as reported by the Los Angeles Daily News.

This contrasts with a survey in July, which found 64 per cent of supporters from 342 responses and 20 per cent of opponents.

Organisers plan to build a temporary Valley Sports Park in the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Centre to stage equestrian and shooting during the 2028 Olympics and Paralympics.

Canoe slalom had initially been planned to be staged there too, but the Riversport Rapids Whitewater Center in Oklahoma could be selected as the venue instead.

San Fernando Valley was not used the last time Los Angeles hosted the Olympics in 1984 after plans to stage rowing and track cycling there ran into strong opposition.

Some residents expressed concerns to the Los Angeles Daily News about increased traffic in the area caused by hosting the Games and claimed it would only deliver a short-term benefit, but the polls appear to show more are in favour of staging events at Los Angeles 2028.

Organisers of the Games in five years' time have stressed the use of entirely existing or temporary facilities to stage events.
