Debutants David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig started the 2023 International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Beach Volleyball World Championships with a commanding win.

The Swedes defeated Dany Leon and Marcos Tenorio of Ecuador 21-16, 21-12 at the Tlaxcala bullring.

It was redemption for the European champions, who had to back out of the last edition in Rome due to a last-minute injury.

"It feels really good to have won in our World Championships debut," said Hellvig.

"I thought our passing was very strong and that helped us have a powerful offense too.

"We expect our next matches to be more challenging, so we'll need to be even more focused going forward."

The 14th edition of the event in Mexico also saw defending champions Anders Mol and Christian Sørum get the better of Ainadino Martinho and Jorge Monjane of Mozambique.

The favourites and reigning Olympic champions triumphed 21-13, 21-9 in Huamantla.

Mol and Sørum will face Italians Daniele Lupo and Enrico Rossi next after they came out on top against Dutch duo Stefan Boermans and Yorick de Groot with 10-21, 23-21, 15-12.

Meanwhile, Thomas Hodges and Zachery Schubert of Australia secured a 21-18, 21-18 victory against the Portuguese pair of Hugo Campos and João Pedrosa.

Among women, Bárbara Seixas and Carol Salgado had to work hard to prevail 23-21, 23-25, 15-9 against Italians Margherita Bianchin and Claudia Scampoli.

"It’s great to start with a good win," Salgado was quoted as saying by Volleyball World.

"It’s very important for us to gain confidence for the tournament.

"I’m really happy that we made it.

"It’s amazing to be here again.

"I love the city and the people, they’re all so nice to us."

The duo was the first team to clinch the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour event in Tlaxcala.

It was also the Brazilian pair's first victory as partners.

They will now run into Laura Ludwig and Louisa Lippmann of Germany, who managed to beat Miki Ishii and Sayaka Mizoe of Japan 21-12, 21-10.

Ágatha Bednarczuk and Rebecca Cavalcanti Barbosa Silva could not add to the Brazilian triumph.

They lost to Germans Sandra Ittlinger and Karla Borger 18-21, 21-18, 12-15.

Spaniards Daniela Álvarez Mendoza and Tania Moreno also won in straight sets, easing past Americans Terese Cannon and Megan Kraft 28-26, 21-15.
