In his first appearance since suffering a knee injury in March, New Zealand's captain Kane Williamson scored a half century before having to retire hurt late on.

He left the pitch in the 39^th over with 78 runs after being hit on his right thumb by the ball.

"I've got a scan tomorrow... hopefully it's ok," Williamson said.

"It got a bit fat and colourful straight away, so just made holding the bat a bit difficult.

"Secondary to the thumb, it was great to get through it from a knee perspective.

"And from a team perspective, it was a really nice performance."

Williamson established an 80-run partnership with Devon Conway while also combining with Daryl Mitchell who smashed the winning six with 43 balls to spare.

Earlier in the match, Mushfiqur Rahim top-scored for Bangladesh on 66 while captain Shakib Al Hasan hit 40 before also picking up an injury.

He was taken by player of the match Lockie Ferguson who recorded three wickets for 49 runs.

Bangladesh's performance was a long way from troubling New Zealand as they followed up convincing wins over holders England and The Netherlands.

The third consecutive success sees them set the early pace at the top of the table.

Competition is set to continue tomorrow with a blockbuster fixture between hosts India and their neighbours Pakistan at the 132,000-capacity Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

New Zealand are next in action against Afghanistan on Wednesday (October 18) as the Black Caps look to make it four wins in four.

As for Bangladesh, still searching for their first win, they next face India on Thursday (October 19).
