Australia's Saya Sakakibara was crowned as the overall International Cycling Union BMX Racing World Cup champion after nearly quitting the sport.

The 24-year-old sealed the women's circuit title after winning both of the final events of the season in Santiago del Estero in Argentina.

It completed a remarkable comeback for Sakakibara who suffered head injuries after a crash at the rearranged Tokyo 2020 Olympics in 2021.

"This time last year, I was definitely in the lowest of the lows, definitely thought of giving up altogether," she said.

"Really didn't think it was worth the risk, but I'm so happy that I brought out the courage and gave it one more red-hot go, and I think it really paid off.

"It just goes to show how important it is to go through those hard times and there's always something better on the other side where you learn so much, and I definitely learned so much this year, and yeah, I'm just so grateful for the experience."

Sakakibara also had the motivation of her brother and fellow rider Kai, who was left in a coma for two months after a crash in 2020.

Roman Mahieu wrapped up the overall men's title as he claimed a second place finish and then a victory to round-off the season.

The French rider came home behind Cameron Wood of the United States before storming to victory in the second.
