Boxers at the Pan American Games in Santiago have debated the instant score system being used to judge fights.

The sport began its schedule at the Games in the Chilean capital yesterday, before the Opening Ceremony which is due to take place today.

Instant score sees the round scores of all five judges flash up on the big screen after each of the three rounds, instead of just at the end.

The system was introduced in a bid for more transparency after referee and judging controversies, but some have claimed it takes the excitement out of the sport.

For example, if a boxer knows they are two rounds up going into the last, it can encourage defensive fighting to see the bout out and win the contest.

If a boxer is unsure of the scores, they may still attempt to force the initiative.

"The coaches are aware and if you are losing or winning change the strategy," said Colombia's Cristian Salcedo, who won unanimously at super heavyweight against Trinidad and Tobago's Nigel Paul, to AP.

"If you are losing you go out to give everything, if you win you come out calmer.

"It's a positive change because as an athlete you know how much to push yourself or regulate yourself."

Salcedo's team-mate Yilmar Gonzalez went two rounds up in his men's featherweight clash, but let Puerto Rico's Caleb Tirado back into the contest in the third as he eased off.

Gonzalez eventually won with a 4-1 split verdict.

"On the instructions of my corner we went behind, they told me to save myself a little, although I always like to finish well," Gonzalez said.

"In the end it was a good result and the strategy came out."
