Luis Mejía Oviedo of the Dominican Republic has been re-elected as President of Centro Caribe Sports for a second four-year term until 2027.

Mejía was the only candidate for the role and was elected by standing ovation at the Sheraton Hotel in Santiago, which is currently hosting the Pan American Games.

Centro Caribe Sports, previously the Central American and Caribbean Sports Organization, organises the Central American and Caribbean Games and boasts members from those regions.

The Dominican official has been President since 2019 after he unseated Steve Stoute of Barbados.

Mejía was due to lose his International Olympic Committee (IOC) membership this year having reached the upper age limit of 70 for those elected in the 21st century.

However, he was given an exemption to remain as a member at the IOC Session in Mumbai on October 16, and will now serve a four year extension through to 2027.

This is because of his role as President of Centro Caribe Sports, the Session heard, although his re-election to that role had not yet been rubber-stamped at that point.

Mejía was involved with the main talking point of the Session as he was one of three members to call for an Olympic Charter amendment to allow Thomas Bach to extend his IOC Presidency beyond the currently permitted 12 years.

Centro Caribe Sports is due to celebrate its 100th anniversary next year.
