Taekwondo: Stage is set for Santiago 2023 Parapan Games

Exciting battles and rivalries are expected to take centre stage as Para Taekwondo athletes prepare for the second edition of the Para Pan American Games in Santiago.

The stage is all set for the Santiago 2023 Para Pan American Games with some of the world's best Para Taekwondo athletes, including World and Paralympic champions, ready to dazzle the crowds with their extraordinary technique and skill. This is the second time the sport has been included in the Parapan American Games programme, following its successful debut in Peru.

Up to 70 athletes (44 men and 26 women) from 15 Pan American nations will be competing at the upcoming continental games. Notable athletes include defending champion Evan Medell of the USA (men's K44 +80kg), Paralympic gold medallist Nathan Torquato of Brazil (men's K44 -63kg) and Paralympic bronze medallist Juan Samorano of Argentina (men's K44 -70kg).

The women's field also looks competitive too with the likes of Peruvian Paralympic champion Angelica Espinoza Carranza (women's K44 -47kg) and Mexico's Claudia Romero looking for yet another showdown. Brazil will have some strong names in their ranks including reigning world champions Silvana Cardoso Fernandes (women's K44 -57kg) and Carolina Silva de Moura (women's K44 -65kg). 

Chakir Chelbat, technical delegate of the Santiago 2023 Para Taekwondo Committee, was confident of another successful regional championships after the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou.

 "We are just days away from witnessing another spectacular continental games. The Santiago 2023 organisers are working very hard and are determined to deliver a great event and platform for all the athletes. We are in regular contact with them, through online meetings and discussions," said Mr. Chelbat. He also revealed that 16 international referees have been appointed for to the Games.
