Athletics Kenya on Thursday unveiled its men's and women's marathon teams for Paris 2024, with six women and five men set to seek glory in France. Eliud Kipchoge will be running in his fifth Olympic Games - and has won he missed out on London 2012 - and has won a medal in each of his previous appearances.

He is aiming to make history by winning his third Olympic marathon gold medal, an unprecedented feat after triumphs at Rio in 2016 and at Tokyo in 2021. "The journey begins as we defend our crown," Kenya's National Olympic Committee said on X.

Kenya's Olympic marathon squad boasts an impressive line-up of athletes. The men's team will be led by Eliud Kipchoge, Vincent Kipkemoi Ngetich, Timothy Kiplagat, Benson Kipruto and Alexander Mutiso.

On the women's side, the squad includes familiar names such as Ruth Chepngetich, Brigid Kosgei, Helen Obiri, Rosemary Wanjiru, Sharon Lokedi and defending champion Peres Jepchirchir.

With a mix of seasoned veterans and promising newcomers, Kenya's marathon team is poised to make a significant impact at the upcoming Olympic Games.

The month before, Kipchoge finished 10th at the Tokyo 2024 Marathon, behind winner Kipruto, who ran 2:02:16, and Kiplagat, who finished with a time of 2:02:55. Less than a month before the race, the world record holder Kelvin Kiptum tragically died in Kenya after his car collided with a tree.
