The Spanish city of Valencia was awarded the 2027 European Athletics Indoor Championships on Friday at the 173rd meeting of the European Athletics Council in Rome.

Valencia, a city where its marathon grows every year, will host the European Athletics Indoor Championships for the second time, having previously organised the event in 1998 and the World Indoor Athletics Championships in 2008. Like its predecessors, the event will be held at the Luis Puig Velodrome, one of Spain's leading indoor athletics venues.

"The ability of the Roral Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA) to organise outstanding continental and global athletics events is beyond question and Valencia has hosted several major championships in the past, so we know it has a proven and reliable infrastructure," said European Athletics President Dobromir Karamarinov.

"However, two additional factors were particularly impressive in Valencia's presentation to the European Athletics Council: the commitment to involving the local community and also what their bid committee have called the 'Green Leap', their sustainable legacy for these championships.

"On behalf of European Athletics, I can say with absolute confidence that Valencia will be a wonderful host for these championships," concluded Karamarinov.

Valencia equals Madrid with two hosts of this tournament as the top Spain cities that held it. Göteborg and Viena continue to be the places with the most European Athletics Indoor Championships hosts with three.

"We are delighted and thrilled. This decision fills us with joy and eager anticipation as we prepare to showcase the best of European athletics in our beautiful city. Valencia welcomes Europe with open arms and a heart full of excitement," said Raul Chapado, president of the RFEA and member of the European Athletics Council.

"Valencia is once again at the epicentre of elite sports. This city has extensive experience in managing major sporting events and the European Athletics Indoor Championship is poised to be another success, carrying significant economic and sporting implications for the city. We are committed to hosting an unforgettable championship," said María José Catalá, Mayoress of Valencia.
