Roma defender Evan Ndicka has received clearance to return to sporting activities after previously collapsing on the pitch.

The 24-year-old was stretchered off in Friday's Serie A clash with Udinese, with the match ultimately suspended after 18 minutes with the scores tied at 1-1. It has since been revealed that the Frenchman suffered a collapsed lung after having undergone a series of tests.

Ndicka remained conscious but visibly in pain, clutching his chest with his right hand as the medical team hurried to assist him. He was released from the hospital a day after the incident, which took place on April 14.

"Ndicka underwent a series of cardiologic and third-level pulmonary tests," Roma said in a statement. "Tests conducted confirmed the absence of cardiac pathologies and the healing of the minimal pneumothorax that occurred during the match. The player is therefore fit for resuming sports activity that will be monitored in the following days."

Roma, currently fifth in the Italian top flight with six games remaining, will travel to Napoli on Sunday. It still remains unclear, however, whether Ndicka will be included in the starting XI straight from the off.

His boss manager Daniele de Rossi previously reassured concerns regarding Ndicka's potential cardiac issues and disclosed the cause of the Ivory Coast center-back's troubles. "A collapsed lung is a painful thing but luckily, if we can say that, he's not suffering from what we feared," De Rossi said.

Paris-born Ndicka, who who represents the Ivory Coast, spent one night in the hospital under observation before being permitted to return to Rome from Udine, as tests showed no indication of cardiac issues. The match, which was tied at 1-1 when suspended following consultation between referee Luca Pairetto and the two benches, will need to be finished.

The Roma squad visited Ndicka in the hospital before his discharge, and a statement released on Sunday night confirmed that he was 'feeling better and in good spirits'. Ivory Coast talent Ndicka initiated the game at the Stadio Friuli in Udine, where former Watford midfielder Roberto Pereyra handed the hosts the lead before Romelu Lukaku equalised.

After collapsing to the ground, Ndicka raised his thumb as he was stretchered off down the tunnel. Days after his fall, his teammates dedicated their 2-1 second-leg UEFA Europa League victory over AC Milan to him, before inviting Ndicka onto the pitch to celebrate with them.
