The track and field star who brought home bronze from the 2016 Rio Olympics, stumbled after landing heavily in the water jump during the 3,000-meter steeplechase event at the Diamond League meet. Initially thinking it was a sprain, Coburn revealed that her injury was much more severe, including torn ligaments, damaged cartilage, and a fracture in her medial malleolus. Coburn has since then undergone surgery, which included cleaning the cartilage and getting a screw fitted in the joint.

“That means I’m out for the Olympic Trials.” Coburn wrote. 

“There has been a *lot* of heartbreak in the last couple years for me, but damn, I love this sport and nothing heals a broken heart like working hard and getting back.”

Aside from her Olympic bronze, the 33-year-old has two world championship medals – a gold from 2017 and silver from 2019. She was hoping to compete in her fourth Olympics in Paris later this year.
