Katarina_Witt_Jan_18January 20 - Olympic figure skating champion Katarina Witt (pictured), now the chair of Munich's bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics and Paralympics,  has been named the winner of this year's ispo Cup.

Presented since 1971, the international sports business network's award honours exceptional retired professional athletes for their contribution to sports and social projects.

Witt, the high-profile face of Munich's bid for the 2018 Winter Olympics, has not only kept an international audience in thrall with her exciting ice shows, but also works continuously to help disabled children with her foundation, Katarina Witt Stiftung.

When Witt was five-years-old she first stepped on an ice skating rink in the former East German Karl-Marx-Stadt, now Chemnitz.

This was the beginning of an extraordinary career as she grew up to become one of the world's most successful figure skaters thanks to her special charisma, and her athletic and artistic talents.

Her career encompassed two Olympic victories, four World Championships and six European Championships as well as eight national master titles.

After retiring from her professional career Witt fully involved herself in her ice shows, and has worked actively as a moderator, actress, writer, and entrepreneur.

While she was a professional athlete, Witt was always grateful for her excellent health and to share this good fortune she founded the Katarina Witt Stiftung in 2005.

The foundation's goal is to help children and youths with disabilities gain more mobility.

A number of different projects strive to bring more vitality, mobility and happiness into the everyday life of these children and youths.

The foundation is active in Germany as well as on an international level.

Previous ispo Cup winners include Franz Beckenbauer in 1990, Franz Klammer in 1992, Eddy Merckx in 1993, Sergey Bubka in 2006 and Oliver Kahn in 2010.
