Karen WebbJanuary 29 - Karen Webb has quit the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC), where she was executive director of marketing and communications, to set up as an independent consultant.

Her first client is Westfield, whose Stratford City shopping centre is the gateway to the London 2012 Olympic Park and who are a Tier Three sponsor of the Games.

Webb is one of the most respected and liked marketing figures within the Olympic Movement. having first made her name at Sydney 2000 where she was in charge of media and marketing communications and, where coincidentally, Westfield were among the sponsors.

After Sydney she joined the International Olympic Committee (IOC) where she was vice-president for image and marketing communications, staying there for eight years before moving to England where she worked for Vero Communications and the Greater London Authority before moving to the OPLC, where she was a key figure in London's successful bid to host the 2017 World Athletics Championships.

"As I approach my seventh Games, I am enjoying the variety of juggling different projects and am extremely excited to be working very closely with Westfield, Australian shopping centre giant, where I am advising them on their Games' sponsorship and leading on corporate affairs and communications around 2012," said Webb.

Webb's decision to leave the OPLC coincides with the decision by London Mayor World Athletics Championships to incorporate them into a new company, the Mayoral Development Corporation.

But the two are not believed to be connected.

"I have now left the OPLC after two full-on years," said Webb.

"I am pleased to have been part of the leadership team who established the organisation and developed the strategic direction for the future Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

"Having been responsible for a broad portfolio - including marketing, major events, communications, community and corporate affairs, I ended last year, with OPLC as a client, focused on their Games legacy strategy and on the 2017 World Athletics Championships, where we were successful in our campaign."
