powerman Zofingen_14-02-12February 14 - The International Triathlon Union (ITU) has announced that it will continue its partnership with the International Powerman Association (IPA) to stage the ITU Powerman Long Distance Duathlon World Championships through to next year.

The deal means they will stage the 2012 and 2013 versions of the event as part of the Powerman Series to be held in Zofingen, Switzerland.

"With this continued partnership with Powerman, a stronger, brighter future is in store for international duathlon," said Marisol Casado, the ITU President.

"Zofingen offers a beautiful and challenging backdrop for the gruelling test of long distance duathlon."

Last year's events were won by Belgium's Joerie Vansteelant and New Zealand's Melanie Burke.

The 2012 competition will see duathletes battling it out over a 10 kilometre run, 150km bike ride and final 30km run as the event is held on September 1-2.

Prize money of $50,000 (£32,000/€38,000) is on offer for the duathletes, and IPA President John Raadschelders said: "In 2011 we established an ITU Powerman working committee with the mission to boost duathlon and create more awareness for the sport.

"Faith in each other is fundamental to this continued partnership for 2012 and 2013."

Stefan Ruf, President of Powerman Zofingen, said: "The extension of the cooperation between ITU and Powerman over two years is an important message for the sport of duathlon and opens to athletes and federations new perspectives.

"The possibility to win the ITU World Championship title at the epic Powerman Zofingen event makes this race unique for the elite and age group athletes."
