Europe celebrates_victory_in_2010_Youth_OlympicsAugust 18 - Qualification details for the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing have been announced by the International Triathlon Union (ITU).


As at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore two years ago, Nanjing 2014 will feature individual sprint distance triathlons for 32 women and 32 men, as well as a mixed relay competition with continental teams.

Then New Zealand's Aaron Barclay and Japan's Yuka Sato won the individual races while a mixed squad from Europe claimed victory in the team relay (pictured above).

One woman and one man will be the maximum for each National Olympic Committee (NOC).

All athletes must have been born between January 1, 1997 and December 31, 1988 to take part in Nanjing 2014 triathlon events, slated for August 16 to 18, 2014.

The qualifying events in all of the five continents will take place from January 1 to June 8, 2014.

These will consist of an individual sprint triathlon on the first day and a triathlon mixed relay on the second day.

Each qualifying event will be permitted a quota of athletes based on the number and performance of NOCs with National Federations affiliated to ITU.

The maximum per continent, per gender is: three for Africa; eight for the 
Americas; five for
 Asia; 11 for
 Europe; and two for Oceania.

As the host country China, will be entitled to one women's spot and one men's spot.

Two universality spots per gender will be available to eligible NOCs.

Marisol Casado, ITU President and International Olympic Committee (IOC) Member, who also sits on the IOC Coordination Commission for the Games, said: "ITU and triathlon is proud to be featured in the Youth Olympics Games, particularly going down in history as the first medal awarded in Singapore 2010.

"We firmly believe that the spirit of the Youth Olympic Games can help inspire the world's youth and the triathlon stars of the future will be showcased in Nanjing 2014."

The dates and locations of the continental YOG qualifying events will be confirmed shortly.
