Gill inespected the work at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, Dr. Shyma Prasad Mukherjee Aquatics Complex and Talkatora Indoor Stadium.

The three venues will host hockey, swimming and boxing events respectively.

A Government report last week claimed work on 14 of the 19 sports venues is running late, while nine transport projects to improve Delhi's congested road network are at "high risk" of not being completed when the Games open on October 3 next year.

Gill said: "Every human effort is being made to deliver the sporting facilities well before time."

Gill had a comprehensive review of the construction progress of the three venues with the officials of the Central Public Works Department (CPWD), the Sports Authority of India, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and representatives of the organising committee.

Gill said the swimming complex will be ready to hold the test event in April.

He praised engineers and workers for building such complex engineering facilities and emphasised the need to take adequate safety precautions while executing the complex engineering project.

The Talkatora Indoor Stadium will be completed by November 1, officials claimed.

Gill was also impressed with the progress of work at Major Dhyan Chand Stadium.

Senior politicians and officials are desperately trying to reassure the international community that India will be ready to host the Games, the biggest event the country has held since the 1982 Asian Games and which is seen as the forerunner to a bid for the 2020 Olympics.

Last week organising committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi claimed during a visit to London that Delhi would stage the best Commonwealth Games ever.
