April 21 - Oliver Townend (pictured), Britain’s top three-day event rider, is ready to compete for the Rolex Grand Slam in Kentucky after completing a 51-hour journey from his home in Shropshire involving a 14-hour, £1,600 ($2,461) night-time taxi ride over the Pyrenees and a chartered flight to Disneyland, Miami from Madrid airport.

The 27-year-old Yorkshireman had been concerned that the volcanic ash crisis affecting European airspace would prevent his attempt to become the second rider in history to win the Badminton, Burghley and Kentucky trials back-to-back, with a jackpot of £233,000 ($358,000).

But after arriving in Lexington and visiting his horses, Ashdale Cruise Master and ODT Master Rose, who travelled last week, Townend declared he was “very positive” about the competition, which starts tomorrow.

"I was glad to see and ride my horses after my torturous trip," said Townend, who is hoping to emulate the grand slam achieved by compatriot Pippa Funnell in 2003.

"They are in great nick.

"I was very impressed by how well they are.

"It’s been a difficult journey but I am putting that behind me now and concentrating on the job I have to do.

"I don’t think I have suffered from the long hike to Kentucky.

People who work with horses are used to long hours, early mornings and late nights.

"All those dark, icy mornings on the stable yard this winter toughened me up.

"We always joke that eventers only sleep in November anyway.

"A lot of families with young children have been going through worse than me with the travel chaos.

"Having ridden the horses and talked to my assistant, Kath here, we are now feeling very positive about the competition ahead.

"This is an event to relish and I am determined to do the very best I can for the team back at the yard, my owners and all the people who support British eventing."
