May 28 - London 2012 have signed a deal with Italian company Mondo to supply the athletics track for the Olympic Stadium along with flooring for up to 10 other sports, including basketball, table tennis, wheelchair basketball and goalball.

Mondo is an approved supplier of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and the International Basketball Federation (IBAF) and has supplied the past nine Olympic Games, starting in Montreal in 1976 and most recently in Beijing in 2008.

Under the deal, which sees Mondo become a Tier Three supplier and the "Official Supplier for Sport Flooring and Equipment", they will also provide technical support services, including installation, maintenance and cleaning.

In line with London 2012’s sustainability aspirations, the products provided are environmentally friendly throughout all stages of their life - from production using recycled materials, through to disposal.

Mondo, the 32nd company to sign-up as a sponsor for London 2012, has also agreed to provide some of the materials on a rental basis, with a pledge to reassign them after the Games for future use.

Sebastian Coe, the chairman of London 2012 and a double Olympic former 1500 metres champion, said: "I set my first world record and won Olympic medals on Mondo tracks so I know they will provide world class products and services for London 2012.

"We look forward to working with them between now and 2012 to provide all athletes coming to the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games top class facilities and equipment.

"This is another example of the innovative approach we are taking to our commercial programme, bringing world class suppliers to the table."

Athletes will compete on the Mondotrack FTX, the same surface which was used at the Olympics in Beijing in 2008 and on which Usain Bolt (pictured) set world records in the 100 and 200 metres.

They are just two of more nearly 250 world records set on Mondo tracks.

But the track will be tailored to meet the specific requirements of both the Olympic Stadium in London and the English climate, the company set.

Basketball players, on the other hand, will face one another on the innovative, removable flooring system, Fast Break System 2, which Mondo claim has been created to both optimise athletic performance and reduce the time required for assembly and disassembly.

Maurizio Stroppiana, the managing director of Mondo S.p.A, said: "I am both proud and honoured to be able to sign our tenth contract to become suppliers to the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

"Mondo continues to be the permanent and indispensable benchmark for the success of sporting events the world over."
